ZSFG Clinical LaboratoriesThe ZSFG Clinical Laboratory performs more than five hundred different diagnostic laboratory procedures on blood, body fluids and other specimen types, providing routine and emergency (STAT) services 24 hours daily. The laboratory is accredited by The Joint Commission and maintains federal (CLIA) certificate and California state license. This department employs Clinical Pathologists, residents, PhD faculty staff, Clinical Laboratory Scientists, CLS Specialists, Lab Technicians, LVNs and other professional support personnel. This department of ZSFG hospital provides laboratory diagnostic services to patients at ZSFG hospital, Laguna Honda hospital, SFHN clinics, consortium clinics, Occupational Health Services and other SFHN affiliated services, generating approximately 2 million billable tests and reports over 4.3 million test results annually.

Provided services include (but are not limited to) the following:

  • Phlebotomy services for ZSFG outpatients
  • Clinical Chemistry analysis (routine and special)
  • Toxicology testing
  • Hematology (routine and special), coagulation studies, urinalysis, body fluid and blood gas analysis, fecal occult blood detection, semen analysis, and bone marrow assistance
  • Microbiology studies – including bacteriology, mycobacteriology, mycology, virology, parasitology and molecular diagnostics
  • Immunology and Serology testing
  • Transfusion services, including pre-transfusion testing, release of blood components, transfusion reaction work-ups
  • Point of Care Testing (POCT) services, including coordination, oversight and maintenance of existing POCT programs and establishment of new POCT at ZSFG campus sites;
  • Technical or Clinical Consultation is available 24//7


Expected turnaround time (TAT) from specimen receipt in the laboratory to availability of results in the electronic medical record system for routine high-volume general laboratory tests is 1-4 hours. The target turnaround time for “stat” tests is within one hour of specimen receipt in the laboratory.
