Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Dallas Department of Laboratory Services is a hospital-based inpatient and outpatient laboratory. The clinical laboratory handles over 1,500,000 specimens annually and the number of specimens is growing. The clinical laboratory is full service and is partnered with ARUP Laboratories to provide a complete menu of clinical testing. The Anatomic Pathology services include general Surgical Pathology with frozen section consultation, autopsy, a fine needle aspiration service, and a Cytology Department.

The laboratory is fully accredited by state, federal, and professional licensing authorities. The work is internally monitored to assure that quality services are provided. External monitoring is accomplished through participation in outside quality assurance programs.

We are dedicated to providing accurate information in a cost-effective and timely fashion to staff and patients. In this age of cost management, it has become vital to choose the most cost-effective and efficient testing protocols. Dr Alan Fein described the laboratory's role succinctly when he said, "The clinical laboratory is a potent weapon against disease, but only when employed in a cost-effective and focused manner." This website has been created to assist in providing the information necessary to fulfill this role.

Patient safety and the quality of test results are directly related to the integrity of the specimen collected. Therefore, proper collection and handling of specimens is tantamount. Accurate patient identification using two patient identifiers and proper labeling of specimens is the first and most critical step in this process. Timely specimen transport and specimen preparation are also necessary to ensure intact analytes and accurate test results.
The laboratory makes every attempt to maintain compliance with all federal and state guidelines for federally funded healthcare programs. At the federal government's request, we are taking this opportunity to notify you of the requirements that apply when ordering lab tests for which Medicare or Medicaid reimbursement is sought:

  • A physician should only order those tests which he/she believes are medically necessary for each patient.

  • The United States Department of Health and Human Services, Office of the Inspector General, takes the position that the physician who orders medically unnecessary tests may be subject to civil penalties.
