Measurement of the blood concentration of alpha feto-protein is primarily done in three instances: (1) In pregnancy AFP concentrations are measured as part of the triple/quad/penta marker tests used to assess possible fetal abnormalities; (2) the concentration of blood AFP is a tumor marker for patients with hepatic cancer; (3) or blood AFP concentration is a tumor marker for some germ cell tumors.
