PCR-based COVID-19, influenza and RSV testing coming to all IU Health hospitals

New Orderable: Covid Flu RSV PCR

Beginning Wednesday, Oct. 1, multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based testing for influenza A virus, influenza B virus, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) will be available at all IU Health hospitals throughout Indiana. These pathogens are simultaneously detected using a single test, so multiple test orders will no longer be necessary.
Antigen-based testing will be discontinued.

PCR testing offers several benefits to patient care, such as faster and more accurate diagnosis, results in <60 minutes (may vary during high demand periods) and bringing tester closer to a patient's point of care.
These tests should be used for patients with flu-like symptoms (fever + cough/sore throat) who are:
Seen in outpatient clinics or emergency departments
Admitted to inpatient wards
Not immunocompromised

For immunocompromised patients or ICU admissions, RVP2 PCR should be ordered instead. Team members can view testing algorithms for adults and testing algorithms for pediatric patients as quick reference guides to assist with any initial questions.

Molecular Testing:
IUHPL Molecular Laboratory is now offering the Essential Myelopropliferative Neoplasms (eMPN) NGS panel, designed to provide accurate, timely and robust molecular testing for MPNs.

The panel covers the hotspot mutations in JAK2, CALR and MPL genes, with high sensitivity and specificity using minimal DNA input. Key features:
·Low sample requirements-as low as 10 ng of DNA.
·Fast turnaround time – as short as one week.
·Low limit of detection – variant allele frequency can be as low as 1%.

The test supports precise diagnosis and treatment decisions, helping improve patient outcomes.
Please feel free to reach out to molecular lab team for more information or to discuss how this panel can benefit your practice.
