Patient Preparation

Patient should not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before collecting oral sample.

Collection Comments

Patient should not eat, drink, smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before collecting oral sample. Transport specimen in 3 mL viral transport media, UTM. The recommended specimen for mumps virus detection is a buccal swab collected within 9 days of symptom onset.  If specimen transport is delayed, specimens muct be stored between 2-8C until shipped.Specimens are stable if refrigerated for up to 7 days. DO NOT STORE SPECIMENS IN A CONVENTIONAL FREEZER.
