Fasting patient is preferred but not required. Process within 2 hrs of collection. Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angle to separate cells from serum.Refrigerate spun tube. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date.
Immunoglobulin A (IgA) is an antibody class with an important role in mucosal immunity. The IgA secretory form is present in numerous secretions from the lungs, tears and salivary glands. The IgA test is most frequently ordered when a plasma cell cancer is suspected or in the evaluation of immune function. IgA is included in the immunoglobulin panel or it may be requested individually.

Clinical Interpretation
Analysis performed using the Beckman Coulter turbidimetric methodology on the Beckman Coulter AU Series platform. Patient results determined by assays using different methods from different manufacturers may not be comparable.
If IgA deficiency is of clinical concern, such as if the patient is likely to receive a blood transfusion, please call the lab within 5 days of the of when the original IgA specimen was drawn and request that the remnant specimen be re-tested on a different instrument to determine the low-level IgA concentration
