Collection Comments

This test is recommended for adult females, children and individuals on Testosterone-Suppressing Therapy.  Collect between 6-10 a.m. Do not collect in Orange Tube. Process within 2 hrs of collection. Allow Gold tube to sit for 30 minutes to form clot. Spin for 10 minutes at 1100-1300 g in a swing bucket unit or 15 minutes in a fixed angle to separate cells from serum. Refrigerate spun tube. Remember to properly label tube with patient name, DOB, test and collect date. Transfer 1 mL serum(minimum 0.8 mL) to a standard ARUP transport tube and rerigerate. If collecting plasma, please indicate Plasma on aliquot.tube.

Ordering Recommendations

Provides a calculated value for bioavailable testosterone concentration using total testosterone measured by mass spectrometry. May be used to evaluate hyperandrogenism in children and cisgender females, monitor testosterone-suppressing hormone therapies (eg, antiandrogens or estrogens), evaluate testosterone status in individuals with protein-binding abnormalities, or evaluate hypogonadism in cisgender males.
