Patient Preparation

Collect specimen from the skin of the perianal area first thing in the morning, before the patient bathes or defecates. Adult Enterobius vermicularis parasites migrate during the night and deposit eggs in the perianal folds, making the early morning collection preferred.

Collect

Preferred Method- Collect sample using Pinworm Paddle (BD Swube - pictured below, or similar):

  1. Remove paddle from its outer tube.
  2. Press the sticky side of the paddle against the perianal folds several times.
  3. Place paddle back into the tube.

Alternative Method- Collect sample using clear, cellulose tape:

  1. Loop a piece of tape (adhesive side outward) around a wooden stick/tongue depressor.
  2. Press the tape firmly several times against the perianal folds.
  3. Remove the tape carefully, not touching the sticky sides together.
  4. Separate the ends of the tape so there is one flat piece of tape.
  5. Smooth the tape onto a glass slide, adhesive side down.
  6. Place the slide into a slide carrier.
