Ordering Recommendations

This test can only be ordered once every 7 days (168 hours).  EXCEPTION:  Test may be ordered more than one time/7 days IF original source was Endotracheal Aspirate (ETA) and subsequent specimen source is Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL).  Lab staff will have to place second order.

The Pneumonia Panel (PNEU PN NAAT) is a multiplexed nucleic acid test used with FilmArray® Torch systems for the simultaneous detection and identification of multiple respiratory viral and bacterial nucleic acids, and several antibiotic resistance genes in sputum-like or bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL)-like samples obtained from individuals suspected of lower respiratory tract infections. This test targets: Inpatients with signs/symptoms of lower respiratory tract infection including pneumonia

Test Includes

Collect

Specimen Preparation

Preferred volume 5ml (BAL, Tracheal/Endotracheal aspirate)
Minimum acceptable volume 1ml

Storage/Transport Temperature

Unacceptable Conditions

Frozen BAL, Mini-BAL, ETA; Any storage conditions: Sputum; Swabs; Saliva; Acceptable specimens in non-sterile containers

Stability (from collection to initiation)

4 hours at room temperature
24 hours refrigerated (2 - 8°C)

Remarks

Specimen source required. This test will detect Influenza A and B and will differentiate between the two. If subtyping for Influenza A is required, please call the laboratory. This test does not distinguish between living and dead virus and should not be used as a test-of-cure. If B. pertussis infection is specifically suspected, it is recommended to submit a nasopharyngeal swab for testing with a B. pertussis molecular test that is intended for use on patients suspected of having a respiratory tract infection attributable to B. pertussis.  See Bordetella pertussis/parapertussis Nucleic Acid Amplified Test (BORD NAAT).
