Collect

Collect a minimum of 1.0 mL Urine for routine bacterial cultures.

Collect Urine using the 3-part urine collection device.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The tiger top UA tube (yellow/red) is NOT acceptable for urine culture.

Unacceptable Conditions

The UA tube (yellow/red) cannot be used for urine cultures and will be rejected if submitted to lab for culture.

The urine vacutainer tube must be cultured within 48 hours or will be rejected.

Remarks

Identify collection method as clean catch midstream, catheterization (straight or in-dwelling), bladder washings, ileal conduit, nephrostomy, or suprapubic aspirate. Foley catheter tips are not acceptable.

Reported

Gram stain is performed on invasively collected samples.

  • Preliminary: Reported after 12 hours incubation and updated as appropriate.
  • Final: Negatives are reported after 24 hours incubation. Positive reports are generated as available.

Note: Invasively collected samples, such as neprostomy urines or suprapulac aspirates, are held up to 3 days for aerobic culture and 4 days for anaerobic culure.

Synonyms

  • UC

Reference Interval

No growth after 24 hours.

Methodology

Standard reference procedures for quantitative aerobic bacterial culture, bacterial identification and susceptibilities.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Fresh or non-preserved sample must be delivered immediately to the laboratory (inpatients) or placed into preservative within one hour.

Stable: Preserved samples are stable for 48 hours at room temperature.

Outreach Courier Transport Temperature: Room temperature (Preserved samples only)
