Ordering Recommendations

Order MENCP for CSF samples.

Collect

Plasma, serum, trach asp, trach wash, vitreous fluid, aqueous fluid, tissue, rectal/anal, perineum, amniotic fluid
Skin swabs, eye swabs, genital swabs, bronchoaveolar lavage.
Universal Transport Medium (UTM) for swabs; Sterile container for fluids, and tissue; Syringe for aqueous and vitreous fluid; EDTA, or red top, for blood.
For newborns/infants (< 18 months old), collect a minimum of 2 mL lavender (EDTA) tubes or 4 lavender (EDTA) microtainers (pediatric bullet tubes)

Specimen Preparation

Separate plasma or serum from cells.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Transport specimen to laboratory at room temperature

Unacceptable Conditions

Heparinized specimens.
Specimens received more than 96 hours after collection.
Avoid using gel separator tubes.  Samples collected in gel separator tubes have increased rate of PCR inhibition.
