Collect
Stool (2gm/5mL). Use Cary-Blair transport if the specimen will take longer than 2 hours to reach the laboratory. Transport available through Laboratory Client Services.
Rectal swab on pediatric patients for enteric pathogens
Storage/Transport Temperature
Ambient (8-25 °C) or refrigerated (2-8 °C) once in Cary-Blair transport media. Deliver within 72 hours.
Rectal swabs only acceptable from pediatric patients and should be transported immediately.
Unacceptable Conditions
Other preservatives or fixatives are unacceptable; unpreserved stool received >2hr post-collection.
Specimen contaminated with water, urine, soap or toilet paper
