Collection Instructions

Unpreserved stool in clean, dry container or stool preserved in Carey-Blair media according to the manufacturer's direction. Avoid contamination with water, urine, soap or toilet paper.

 

Collect

Stool (2gm/5mL). Use Cary-Blair transport if the specimen will take longer than 2 hours to reach the laboratory.  Transport available through Laboratory Client Services. 

Rectal swab on pediatric patients for enteric pathogens

Storage/Transport Temperature

Ambient (8-25oC) or refrigerated (2-8oC) once in Cary-Blair transport media.  Deliver within 72 hours.
Rectal swabs only acceptable from pediatric patients and should be transported immediately.

Unacceptable Conditions

Other preservatives or fixatives are unacceptable; unpreserved stool received >2hr post-collection.
Specimen contaminated with water, urine, soap or toilet paper

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Unpreserved: 2 hours

Preserved in Cary-Blair: 72 hours
