Interpretive Data

Heterozygous hemoglobin variants, when they exist in the heterozygous state (AS, AD, AE or AC), have no significant clinical effects on HbA1c values. Other abnormal hemoglobin variants have not been evaluated on the program at this time and will be sent out if detected. Homozygous abnormal hemoglobins require assessment by other criteria to assess long term glucose control and will be sent out if detected.

HbA1c values of 5.7-6.4% indicate an increased risk for developing diabetes mellitus.
HbA1c values greater than or equal to 6.5% are diagnostic of diabetes mellitus.
For diagnosis of diabetes in individuals without unequivocal hyperglycemia, results should be confirmed by repeat testing.
