** PLEASE NOTE:
For vaginal collection (self-collect or clinician-collect): the ORANGE Aptima multi-test swab and collection kit must be used.
The PURPLE unisex Aptima swab and collection kits are only acceptable for clinician-collect of endocervical and male urethral and rectal/anal collections.
Throat specimen: use only the ORANGE multi-test swab and collection kit

Collect

Swab specimens are preferred rather than urine. Self-collected vaginal swabs are recommended when female patients are not being physically examined.

Multitest Swab ORANGE: Vaginal, Rectal or Throat
         Note: Only vaginal collections can be self-collected or clinician-collected. All other swab sources must be  
                   clinician-collected
Unisex Swab PURPLE: Cervical/Endocervical, Male Ureathral and clinician collected rectal/anal
PreservCyt (ThinPrep®): Cervical/Endocervical
Urine: collect the first 20 – 30 mL of first-catch urine. Transfer approx. 3 mL of urine to either of the following: 
                   1.) Yellow Aptima urine specimen transport tube. The liquid level must fall between the 2 black                                   indicator lines (window) on the tube.
                   2.) Sterile screw-capped collection cup
                   3.)  Use a clear red-top tube only if transferred from a blue needle cup

 

Storage/Transport Temperature

Swabs submitted in Aptima collection tube at room temperature

Self-collect multi-test vaginal swabs at room temperature

20-30 mL urine in sterile container 2 - 30°C must be transported to lab within 24 hours of collection

Urines in yellow Aptima tube can be sent room temp

Chlamydia testing on PreservCyt (Thin Prep) specimens must be transferred to Aptima specimen transfer tube and tested within 30 days if stored at Room temperature

Place each specimen in a separate, individually sealed bag.

PreservCyt (ThinPrep®) solution liquid pap specimens must be processed for cytology and/or transferred to an aptima specimen transfer tube within 30 days of collection when stored at 2 - 30°C

Unacceptable Conditions

Swabs not in Aptima collection tube.
Torn, punctured, or pierced foil Aptima collection tubes.
Large white cleaning swab is unacceptable for testing.
Urine in a gray-top tube.
Urine specimens in a sterile container than is >24 hours from collection.
A urine transfer tube that has a liquid level above or below the window on the tube label.
PreservCyt (ThinPrep®) specimens previously processed for cytology testing

Remarks

Children < 13 years old: Urine samples must be submitted in a sterile cup (10mL).

Positive Rectal samples will be sent to NYS for LGV testing

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Swabs in Aptima transport media: Ambient: 1 month; Refrigerated: 1 month
Urine in sterile container: 24 hours from collection stored at 2 - 30°C
Urines aliquoted into yellow Aptima tube: 1 month
PreservCyt solution liquid pap specimen transferred to an Aptima specimen tranfer tube must be assayed within 30 days when stored at 2 - 8°C; 14 days when stored at 15 - 30°C
