Ordering Recommendations

Isolator tubes or Yellow Top Vacutainer tubes with SPS are used for the optimal recovery of Mycobacteria in blood.  Order Test Code: BIAFB

Collect

Whole Blood: Collect one 10 mL Wampole Isolator tube.  If Isolator tube is not available, collect one 8 mL Yellow Top Vacutainer Tube with SPS as anticoagulant.  Regardless of tube type, fill with maximum draw if possible: pediatric tubes are not available.

For SMH Inpatient Collections: Obtain collection tubes from hospital stores
For Affiliate Hospitals and Outpatient Collections: Refer to supply ordering website to obtain collection tubes

Storage/Transport Temperature

Submit all in sealed biohazard bags for specimen transport.
Transport to microbiology laboratory at room temperature as soon as possilbe after collection.

Unacceptable Conditions

Leaking tubes
Specimens in tubes with anticoagulant other than SPS
Refrigerated specimens

Remarks

CRITICAL AMBIENT.  Submit within 16 hours after collection

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient: 16 hours; Refrigerated: Unacceptable; Frozen: Unacceptable
Do NOT refrigerate or freeze
