Ordering Recommendations

This test provides for microscopic detection of Pinworm (Enterobius vermicularis) eggs on Scotch tape or adhesive paddle pressed to the skin around the anus.

Collect

Collect perianal material on paddle in early morning prior to defecating or bathing

Storage/Transport Temperature

Transport specimen to laboratory at room temperature

Unacceptable Conditions

Preserved stool
Scotch tape preps using frosted tape, rather than transparent

Remarks

Scotch Tape preps using TRANSPARENT tape or the use of a pinworm paddle are recommended for pinworm detection.  The specimen should be collected between 9:00PM and early morning prior to defecation or bathing.  If using scotch tape, smoothly mount the tape onto a slide immediately after collection.

Paddles and Scotch-tape preps should be taken consecutively over a 3 day period, one per day for optimal recovery of pinworms and pinworm ova.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Ambient: 24 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: Unacceptable
