(K2 and K3 EDTA, Lithium or Sodium Heparinized Plasma are acceptable but not preferred.)
Unacceptable Conditions
SAMPLES IN SODIUM CITRATE. Body fluids, hemolyzed specimens.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Refrigerated. If transport of specimen is not the same day as collected, centrifuge and aliquot the sepcimen into a clean tube. Remove from cells ASAP.
Stability (from collection to initiation)
After separation frm cells: Ambient: 4 days; Refrigerated at 2-8º Celsius for up to 7 days; For longer storage, freeze at -20º Celsius. Avoid multiple freeze/thaw cycles.
Performed
Serology/Microbiology
Notes
Specimens in citrate and specimens on cells greater than 24 hours can cause false positive results.
HIV-1 and HIV-2 antibody confirmatory testing is performed if antibody screens are reactive.
Detection of HIV-1 p24 antigen in the absence of detectable HIV antibody may indicate an acute infection. Confirmation testing is performed via nucleic acid testing, HIV RNA Quantitation.
