Patient Preparation

Patient should be fasting for at least 12-16 hours prior to drawing the sample. Water and prescribed medications are allowed.

Collect

Tube type:

One 6.0 mL PST (Green) tube or

One 6.0 mL SST (Gold) tube.

Volume Requirement:

Optimum: 1.0 mL serum or plasma

Minimum: 0.5 mL serum or plasma

(Microtainer- 1 full microtainer for LIPID panel)

Specimen Preparation

Serum: The gold stopper tube should be allowed to clot before centifuging. Specimens should be centrifuged at minimum 2500 RPM for  minimum 5 minutes. Serum should be separated from the cells promptly to an appropriately labeled tube, unless using SST tube.

Plasma: Mix anticoagulant with specimen adequately. Centrifuge at minimum 2500 RPM for minimu 5 minutes. Remove plasma promptly from cells to an appropriately labeled tube, unless using PST tube.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Centrifuge and remove serum or plasma from the cells within 2 hours of collection.

For transport greater than 8 hours, refrigerate or freeze sample. See below for component stabilities.

Cholesterol – Room temp for 8 hours; Refrigerated for 7 days; Frozen for 3 months
Triglyceride – Room temp for 8 hours; Refrigerated for 7 days; Frozen for 3 months
HDL – Room temp for 14 hours; Refrigerated for 5 days; Frozen for 3 months
LDL, VLDL and Cholesterol/HDL Ratio are calculated values and do not require storage instructions.

Performed

Chemistry.
Daily.

Remarks

Panel includes: Total Cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL Cholesterol, calculated LDL and VLDL and a calculated Cholesterol/HDL ratio.

Do not use sodium citrate or sodium NaF/potassium oxalate as anticoagulants.

Notes

The formulas for calculation are:

Very Low Density Lipoprotein (VLDL)=Triglyceride/5

Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL)=Cholesterol - (HDL + VLDL)

Chemistry.
Daily.

Methodology

Instrument: Beckman Coulter AU5800
