Collect: Blood or Bone Marrow into a Bactec Mycolytic/F bottle (red/white label). Draw aseptically per blood culture collection procedure. Wipe off top of blood culture bottle with alcohol wipe and let dry. Transport to lab immediately at 20-25 degrees centigrade.
Volume recommendations:
3.0-5.0 mL blood for adults
1.0-3.0 mL blood for pediatrics
1.0 mL minimum volume for bone marrow
Notes: Recommended sample if bone marrow not inoculated into the Bactec Mycolytic/F bottle for submission is SPS tube. Deliver to Microbiology within four hours of collection. Sodium heparin also acceptable.
Blood: EDTA/Lavender tubes, heparin tubes or coagulated blood, Bactec bottle refrigerated or placed in an incubator.
Bone Marrow: EDTA/Lavender tubes, coagulated bone marrow, Bactec bottle refrigerated or placed in an incubator.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Critical ambient storage. Transport to lab ASAP.
