Unacceptable Conditions

Specimen received inoculated onto unacceptable media, delay in transport or refrigerated specimen.

Performed

Sun-Sat

Additional Information

Culturing N. gonorrhoeae requires viable organisms and optimal handling after collection. Therefore, for routine diagnosis of gonorrhea in postpubertal individuals and adults, the test recommended is the molecular test for Neisseria gonorrhoeae. However, a molecular test should not be used on prepubertal children, The test of choice is culture for individuals less than 14 years of age. For patients greater than or equal to 14 years of age, identification by nucleic acid methodology can be performed on genital specimens collected in proper transport media. Culture should be used for other sites and individuals <14 years of age. Cultures are screened only for Neisseria gonorrhoeae.
