Special Instructions

Reflex test only, if CDPCR is requested, order CDIFF

Ordering Recommendations

Order when 3 or more unformed stools (specimen has to take the shape of the container) in a 24 hour period.
Testing discouraged for: test of cure, formed stool, repeat testing within 7 days, children <1 year.

Collect

Unformed stool in a clean, airtight container with no preservative

Collect, Minimum Volume

0.5 mL stool

Pediatric Collection

0.5 mL stool

Storage/Transport Temperature

Refrigerated

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Room temperature: 24 hours,
Refrigerated: 5 days

Unacceptable Conditions

Formed stool,
Frozen stool

Remarks

Inhibition of the C. difficile toxin by PCR assay has been observed in the presence of the following substances: Zinc Oxide paste and Vagisil cream
For botulism testing, see BOTC or BOTX
Any molecular test positive for Clostridium difficile toxin gene will be reflexed to detect Clostridium difficile antigen and free toxin to aid in the interpretation of results.
