Acceptable Specimen Collect Alternatives

Sodium Acetate-Formalin (SAF) vials

Duodenal aspirate, Cerebrospinal fluid, Bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL), sputum, urine.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Fresh stool: Ambient - 1 day

Stool collected in Preservative Collection Vial Set: Ambient - 1 year or up to the expiration date on collection vials

Notes

Not recommended for patients who have been hospitalized for >3 days.

If specimen other than stool collected, please call the Diagnostic Infectious Disease Testing Laboratory 513-636-7658 for collection requirements.

Patient Preparation

Do not use antacids, barium, bismuth, antidiarrheal medication, or oily laxatives prior to collection of specimen.

Specimen Preparation

Three stool samples collected on alternate days over a 7 day period is recommended.
