Patient Preparation

Do not use antacids, barium, bismuth, antidiarrheal medication, or oily laxatives prior to collection of specimen.

Collect

Fresh Stool in sterile container (See below).

 Preservative Collection Vial Set: Ambient (see below).

Minimum Collection Volume

5.0 mL

Acceptable Specimen Collect Alternatives

Sodium Acetate-Formalin (SAF) vials

Duodenal aspirate, Cerebrospinal fluid, Bronchioalveolar lavage (BAL), sputum, urine.

Unacceptable Conditions

Stool specimen containing barium salts, oil, or urine

Stool from patients after 3 days of hospitalization

Rectal swabs

Duodenal aspirates are unacceptable, instead order Ova and Parasite detection.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Fresh stool: Ambient or Refrigerated

Stool collected in Preservative Collection Vial Set: Ambient.

Specimen Preparation

Three stool samples collected on alternate days over a 7 day period is recommended.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Fresh stool: Ambient - 1 day

Stool collected in Preservative Collection Vial Set: Ambient - 1 year or up to the expiration date on collection vials
