Patient Preparation

Recommended collection: Three sputum or gastric lavage specimens at 8-24 hour intervals (24 hours when possible) and at least one first-morning specimen. An individual order must be submitted for each specimen.

Specimen Preparation

Respiratory specimens and Gastric Lavages: Transfer (for each collection) 5-10 mL to a sterile container.

Body Fluids or CSF: Transfer 5 mL to a sterile container.

Tissue: Transfer to a sterile container.

Urine: Transfer at least 40 mL to a sterile container.

Blood/Bone Marrow: Collect 4 mL blood into a Green Top 4mL Sodium Heparin. Minimum: 2.0 mL. Call Micro 6-8144 for Green Top 4mL Sodium Heparin
