Minimum Collection Volume

1.0 mL Plasma or Serum (Plasma is preferred)

Acceptable Specimen Collect Alternatives

3 mL blood in Dark Green (Sodium Heparin)
               or
3 mL blood in Red or Gold tubes

Stability (from collection to initiation)

After separation from cells: 

  • Frozen -20°C: 1 week
  • Frozen -70°C: 1 month

3 mL whole blood for up to 24 hours, if the tube has not been opened and has been refrigerated

Specimen Preparation

CCHMC Outpatient Lab:  Transport centrifiged, unopened, refrigerated Lithium Heparin plasma or Sodium Heparin whole blood within 24 hours to CCHMC Processing Department.

Lab Processing Instructions:  Blood should be centrifuged and separated from cells immediately after receipt if not already centrifuged. Transfer plasma or serum into a polypropylene tube, then cap and immediately freeze at -80 C.
