Heparinized syringe (lithium heparin) - 1mL or 3mL

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Clotted samples
  • Samples received in the laboratory > 30 minutes from collection
  • Inadequately filled syringes

Storage/Transport Temperature

  • Specimens must be kept anaerobic (capped) and double-bagged.
  • When using the pneumatic tube system, send specimens to the Blood Gas Laboratory directly without ice (tube system station 7).
  • Specimens must be hand delivered on ice if the pneumatic tube system is unavailable.

Stability (from collection to initiation)
