Prior to collecting sample, patient information needs to be filled out on the OC-Auto sampling bottle, including first and last name, date of birth and date of collection (write clearly using non-smudging pen).
Use the OC FIT collection devices provided by the physician's office and include a copy of the requisition in the return mailer.
Collect
Only use the OC-FIT sample collection container provided.
Stool Collection Process:
1. Collect stool by placing collection paper on the surface of the toilet water or under the toilet lid, be careful not to contaminate sample with urine or toilet water.
2. Open sample collection tube by turning counter-clockwise. Randomly scrape the surface of the stool sample with the sample probe, covering the grooved portion completely.
3. Close the sampling bottle by inserting the probe and screwing the cap on tightly, do not reopen.
4. Return the sampling bottle for testing in the BayCare addressed mailer by USPS, no postage is required. OC-FIT is an exempt human specimen.
Unacceptable Conditions
Patient samples not transported at the correct temperature and not received in the laboratory within 15 days from collection.
Storage/Transport Temperature
Ambient/ Room Temperature 2 - 30oC
Stability (from collection to initiation)
Ambient: 15 days
Remarks
Limitations of Testing:
Patients with the following conditions should not be considered for OC-FIT testing, as these may interfere with test results
Bleeding Hemorrhoids
Constipation bleeding
Menstrual bleeding
Urinary bleeding
However, they may be tested after such bleeding ceases.
Certain medications (ex: Aspirin and Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) may cause gastrointestinal irritation and subsequent bleeding in some patients and cause positive results.
>100 ng hHB (human Hemoglobin)/mL is considered positive
Interpretive Data
The OC-FIT result is reported qualitatively; the cutoff for a positive result is 100 ng human Hemoglobin/mL
This test does not detect upper gastrointestinal bleeding
Positive rates with OC-FIT vary in each patient population depending on age and ethnicity of the patient, the predisposition to colorectal disease, and other factors that may be associated with gastrointestinal bleeding. Testing of patients with hemoglobinopathies has not been validated
Gastrointestinal lesions may bleed intermittently and blood in the feces is not distributed uniformly, a negative result does not assure absence of lesion
Raw vegetables and animal hemoglobin do not interfere or show cross reactivity in the OC-FIT testing platform
Positive result should be followed up with further studies to establish source of bleeding
