Ordering Recommendations

For cervical, vaginal, male urethral, rectal, NP/throat swabs, eye, and urine, Trichomonas testing can be ordered on the same specimen (LIS code TRIVAG).

Notation of specimen source is required. Testing is not performed on specimens requested for test-of-cure if 3 weeks have elapsed; submit a specimen in a Eswab for GC culture and susceptible lab testing.

Acceptable specimens include eye, cervical, vaginal, male urethral, rectal, and NP/throat swabs collected in a GenProbe Aptima 2 Unisex Specimen Collection Kit.
Also acceptable: Unpreserved urine (transfer to an Aptima urine tube if available).

Pediatric Collection

Testing is not performed on patients <11 years old.

Storage/Transport Temperature

Aptima Urine Transport tube; room temperature for all specimens.

Unacceptable Conditions

Swabs received in inappropriate (non Aptima 2) collection devices; Aptima tube with wrong swab (blue shaft swab not sent, white shaft swab sent with or without the blue shaft swab); Preserved urine; Under-filled or over-filled Aptima urine tube; Specimens that are inappropriate for testing (see Related Information Section)

Remarks

This test may produce a false positive or negative result in low prevalence populations.  This assay is not approved for testing eye/throat swabs. An in-house validation for these types of samples has been done.
