Collect

1 mL of an acceptable body fluid type, collected in a sterile container.
Minimum volume: 0.2 mL

  • Ascites
  • Paracentesis
  • Pericardial
  • Peritoneal Dialysate
  • Pleural, Thoracentesis
  • Cyst
For all other body fluid types, contact the Clinical Laboratory-Core to obtain Chemistry Medical Director approval for test performance.

Unacceptable Conditions

  • Sample not properly identified
  • incorrect container
  • insufficient sample volume
  • Unacceptable sample types include synovial fluid and amniotic fluid

Storage/Transport Temperature

Internal: Deliver to lab immediately
Offsite: Refrigerate.

Performed

Daily

Stability (from collection to initiation)

After centrifugation: Ambient, 8 hours; Refrigerated: 5 days; Frozen: Unacceptable.
Fluid aliquot: Ambient, 8 hours; Refrigerated, 5 days; Frozen (-20 degrees C), Indefinitely.

Remarks

Identify fluid source on requisition. Synovial fluid, because of specimen viscosity is not a valid sample type.

Interpretive Data

The reference range for glucose in body fluids is undefined.  The result must be integrated into the clinical context and/or compared to a synchronous serum or plasma measurement.
This test was developed and its performance characteristics determined by University of Colorado Hospital.  It has not been cleared or approved by the FDA.  The laboratory is regulated under CLIA as qualified to perform high-complexity testing. This test is used for clinical purposes. It should not be regarded as investigational or for research.
