Collect

1.  Open the eSwab or CULTURETTE II swab by peeling back the outer packaging.     

2.  Ask the patient to tilt his/her head back and insert swab approximately 1 to 2 cm into each nostril.

                                                      

3.  Rotate the one eSwab or Culturette double swab against the inside of the nostril for 3 seconds.  Apply slight pressure with a finger on the outside of the nose to help assure good contact between the swab and the inside of the nose.          

4. Using the same eSwab or Culturette double swab, repeat for the second nostril, trying not to touch any thing but the inside of the nose with either swab.       

5. Place the swab into the plastic transport tube. Make sure the cap is on tightly.           

   SPECIAL INSTRUCTIONS FOR NEWBORNS AND CHILDREN YOUNGER THAN 2 YEARS

 

1.  Using the eSwab or Culturette II swab, insert only one swab approximately 0.5 to 1 cm into the first nostril.

 

2.  Rotate the swab against the inside of the nostril for 3 seconds.  Apply slight pressure with a finger on the outside of the nose to help assure good contact between the swab and the inside of the nose.

 

3.  Using the same swab, repeat for the second nostril, trying not to touch anything but the inside of the nose with either swab.

 

4.  If using a Culturette ll - Repeat steps 1 through 3 if utilizing the second swab in the Cuturette transport device.

 

5. Place the swab into the plastic transport tube. Make sure the cap is on tightly.                 

        

 

 

   Note: The swabs should stay attached to the cap at all times 

 

 

Storage/Transport Temperature

Transport at room temperature.

Stability (from collection to initiation)

Room temperature: 24 hours.

Remarks

Indicate site of collection. The three recommended sites are nasal, axilla, rectum and/or wounds.

 

All Staphylococcus aureus isolates which are recovered are screened for methicillin resistance.
