• Preferred test for diarrhea in the immunocompromised host in whom multiple tests will be requested
• Preferred test for severe diarrhea requiring hospital admission in patients with travel history or concern for parasitic infection
• Not recommended for hospital-onset diarrhea which is defined as diarrhea that begins 72 hours or more after admission. FOR ADULTS: Preferred test for diarrhea in returned travelers and immunocompromised host when pathogen detection will influence clinical decision. For acute gastroenteritis in immunocompetent hosts consider Enteric Bacterial Panel (BPENT), Bacterial Enteric Extended Panel (BPXENT), Enteric Viral Panel (VPENT) and/or Enteric Parasite Panel (PPENT) which are smaller panels and individually have a lower cost. FOR PEDIATRICS:GIPCR is the preferred test for children with moderate to severe diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, or immunocompromised children. For hospital-acquired diarrhea, begin with testing for C. difficile, not the larger GI Panel.
