Collect

Tissue samples, non-sterile body fluids (e.g. drainage fluid, abscess material, purulent discharge) and sterile body fluids not innoculated into blood culture bottles need to be in Anaerobic Transport Media (ATM). See Anaerobic Transport Media Practice Change Update Oct 2024 for details.
Aspirates, body fluids (such as ascites, peritoneal, paracentesis, pleural, joint/synovial, and other normally sterile body fluids), or tissue or material collected from areas with no normal flora.
     Aspirated specimens are optimal.
Collect specimens in a manner which avoids exposure to air and contamination with normal flora.

If collected with a swab, use either ESwab (preferred) or blue-top swab with gel.
